About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, the densely woven rug of Kurdish Iran long nicknamed the iron rug of Persia for a structure so tightly packed that it can only be rolled, never folded. This piece measures 345 x 259 cm (11'4" x 8'6"), a size built for a proper room rather than an accent underfoot. Its ground sits closer to a deep aubergine than the blue more usually seen in this pattern, an unusually dark field for the type.
What you see
From a distance it reads almost black, an inky blue-aubergine that absorbs light rather than throwing it back. Come closer and it resolves into a fine, close-set diamond lattice, the classic Mahi repeat, each small cell picked out in brick red, dusty blue, rust and cream against that dark ground. There is no medallion to anchor the eye; the pattern simply continues, diamond after diamond, to the edge. That edge is a wide, multi-band border in brick red, its cream floral vine running the full length and taking up close to a fifth of the rug's width, holding the dark field the way a frame holds a painting.
How it was made
The density that gives Bidjar its name is measured here at up to 500,000 knots per square metre, among the tightest in the Persian tradition, reached by working a small proportion of silk in with the wool pile so the yarn could be spun finer and packed harder against a cotton warp. That is what keeps a lattice this small-scale sharp rather than blurring into the ground, and it is why the rug, at 15 mm of pile, feels dense and firm rather than deep and soft. Weeks at the loom became months to reach that count, hand-knotted throughout.
At home
A rug this size and this dark belongs under a dining table or in front of a sofa group, in a living or dining room where it can be seen whole rather than glimpsed in passing. Against pale flooring the near-black ground gives the room something to stand on; against dark furniture it holds its own rather than disappearing. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used rather than one kept for best. What stays with you is how the light moves across it through the day, catching the red and cream of the lattice while the ground beneath stays dark and still.
