About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, a runner from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 221 x 74 cm (7'3" x 2'5"). The type is known as one of the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a knot so dense that the rug can only be rolled, never folded. Most Bijars are woven as heavy room carpets; a runner in this construction is rare.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, filled edge to edge with the fine diamond lattice of a Mahi design, its curling leaf-and-rosette shapes packed tightly together. Set along the centre are three star-shaped medallions, each drawn in navy so dark it reads almost black, with an ivory star at its core. Quarter medallions repeat the same shape into the corners. Around it all runs a border in dark red-brown, held between narrow guard stripes in cream and dusty pink.
How it was made
Kurdish weavers hand-knotted this piece from memory, tying wool pile with a thread of silk through the lighter motifs, at a density of between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre. Silk spins far finer than wool, so it takes a tighter knot, and this is what sharpens the star outlines and gives the ivory and pink their faint sheen against the matte red ground. That same close packing, pressed into a firm 15mm pile, is what gives a Bijar its name and its weight.
At home
A runner of this length and weight belongs in a hallway or along a landing, somewhere it will be walked over daily rather than admired from a doorway. The brick red warms a corridor with little daylight of its own. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, built for exactly this traffic, and the silk keeps catching the light as you pass.
