About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bidjar, also written Bijar, hand-knotted in the Kurdish weaving districts of western Iran, a type collectors have long called one of the Iron Rugs of Persia for a density and weight unmatched elsewhere in the Persian tradition. This piece measures 318 x 253 cm (10'5" x 8'4"), sized for a room built around it rather than a corner filled by it.

What you see

The ground is a deep, near-black red, carrying real weight before any pattern registers. Across it runs an all-over Mahi lattice, diamond after diamond in navy-black, fine and continuous enough that the eye searches for a place to rest. That place is the central medallion, its core worked not in the expected red or cream but in a dusty blue-grey, cutting sharply through the dark field. Cream floral spandrels soften the corners; a wide ivory border of red palmettes and scrolling vine closes the design.

How it was made

That precision comes from a knot count between 441,000 and 500,000 per square metre, among the highest in the Persian tradition, tight enough to hold a knife-edge outline rather than a blurred one. The silk threaded through the wool catches light unevenly, giving the surface a slight sheen rather than a flat matte finish. At fifteen millimetres, the pile sits low and firm rather than deep and soft, which is why the whole field reads as dense and substantial rather than plush.

At home

At 318 x 253 cm, this suits a dining room or a living room seating group. The near-black red holds its own against dark wood, and the dusty blue medallion keeps catching the eye. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use, true to Bijar's reputation for taking traffic without losing sharpness. Evening light draws out a quiet sheen across the dark field.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 318 × 253 cm (8.05 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 8.05 m² that is roughly 3.5 to 4.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
