About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a hand-knotted Bijar runner, also written Bidjar, 257 x 71 cm (8'5" x 2'4"), woven in the Kurdish regions of western Iran. Bijar is the tightest-knotted of all Persian weaving traditions, packed so densely that a finished piece can only be rolled, never folded, which has earned the type a name among collectors: the Iron Rugs of Persia.
What you see
The overall impression is a deep brick red, shot through with black and navy, so consistent that colour reads before any pattern does. Look longer and a dense Mahi lattice of small diamonds covers the whole field, edge to edge, with no medallion to anchor it. Small accents of pale blue sit scattered through the lattice, catching the eye without breaking the field's unity. All of this sits inside a comparatively wide ivory border, drawn with red and dark floral scrollwork that stands out clearly against the dark field.
How it was made
That density is not a figure of speech: this runner carries between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, rare even within Persian weaving. The pile is wool blended with silk over a cotton warp, and silk spins finer than wool, letting the weaver draw a lattice this small without it blurring at scale. At a distance the repeat closes into what looks almost like a solid, textured colour rather than a readable pattern — the knot count doing exactly what it was set to do.
At home
A runner this size suits a hallway or landing, laid where feet cross daily rather than kept for best. The brick red and black hold their own against a dark floor, and warm a hallway with little daylight, while the ivory border keeps its line clear underfoot. Dense and firm to walk on, it takes daily traffic well, and the pale blue accents catch the light differently as you pass along it.
