About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar runner from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 299 x 104 cm (9'10" x 3'5"). Bidjar rugs are known across the trade as the Iron Rugs of Persia, prized for a density of weave that lets them hold their shape and edge for decades under regular foot traffic, longer than almost any other Persian type.

What you see

A deep brick red ground, shading to garnet in places, carries a fine, dense lattice of the Mahi, or "fish", pattern, repeating in small even diamonds along the whole length. Rather than a single medallion at the centre, three navy diamonds are set at even intervals down the runner, so the eye moves along it in steps instead of resting in the middle. A wide cream border, filled with dark floral vine scrollwork touched with green, mustard and pink, closes the field on both sides and holds the red firmly in place.

How it was made

The weave is what makes this possible. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this sits among the densest knotting in the Persian tradition, and it is why Bidjar carries its reputation for structure over softness. The pile is wool blended with silk over a cotton warp: silk spins finer than wool, letting the knot draw tighter, which is why the small diamonds of the lattice stay so crisp at this scale. So compact is the result that the rug can only be rolled, never folded.

At home

A runner of this length suits a hallway or a landing, somewhere made to be walked rather than admired from a chair. The brick red needs no daylight to hold its own, warming a corridor that light rarely reaches, while the cream border keeps its scrollwork legible even in a dim run. Underfoot it is dense and firm, exactly what a well-used hallway asks for, and the tight Bidjar weave is built to take that daily traffic rather than shy from it. Walk its length and the three medallions pass by in turn, one after another, giving the rug its own quiet rhythm underfoot.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 299 × 104 cm (3.11 m²) this is a runner. It belongs in a hallway, an entrance, on a landing or lengthways beside a bed. It is too narrow for the middle of a room.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 3.11 m² that is roughly 1.4 to 1.6 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
