About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 347 x 258 cm (11'5" x 8'6"). The type is known across the Persian tradition as the iron rug, for a structure so dense and compact that a Bidjar can only be rolled, never folded, and for holding its shape through decades of hard use.

What you see

The field is a deep brick red, covered edge to edge in a fine Mahi lattice repeating without a break. At the centre a large lobed medallion rises in navy, filled with cream floral drawing, its pendants reaching along the horizontal axis. The same navy and cream drawing returns in each corner, quarter-medallions matching the centre almost line for line, so the layout reads as a mirror folded twice. A wide ivory-cream border, dense with dark red and navy scrollwork, closes the field and is held by narrower guard stripes.

How it was made

This hand-knotted piece owes its precision to a practical detail. The pile is wool spun with silk, and silk spins finer than wool, so the knot can sit tighter exactly where the medallion's edges needed to hold their line. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — among the densest counts in the Persian tradition — this rug asked months of steady work at the loom. That same density is why a Bidjar can only be rolled, never folded, and why it keeps its sharpness underfoot for decades.

At home

A rug this size settles under a dining table or in front of a living-room sofa group. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and lifts a paler floor. Underfoot it is dense and firm, not soft and deep — built to be walked on, not saved for best. As daylight moves across it, the navy medallion and its mirrored corners keep drawing the eye back to the centre.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 347 × 258 cm (8.95 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 8.95 m² that is roughly 3.9 to 4.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
