About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

A Bidjar, also written Bijar, hand-knotted in the Kurdish weaving towns of western Iran, measuring 304 x 254 cm (10'0" x 8'4"). The type is often called the Iron Rug of Persia, a name earned by a structure so dense and firmly pressed that the finished piece can only be rolled, never folded, and holds its form for decades under daily use.

What you see

The field opens in a deep, saturated brick red, filled with the fine, repeating Mahi lattice. Rising from it is a large, sharply drawn floral medallion with pendants above and below, its outline crisp against the red ground. The same floral spray reappears in each corner, in navy, so the design reads as a mirror across both axes. A wide navy-black border, dense with floral vine, closes the piece, framed by narrow cream and red guard stripes.

How it was made

This precision comes from density: 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, among the highest in the Persian tradition, set on a cotton warp. The pile mixes wool with silk, and because silk spins far finer than wool, it lets the knotter hold a tighter grid and a sharper line, which is why the medallion and its mirrored corners stay so exact. Kept low at 15 mm, the pile presses into a surface so firm the finished rug can only be rolled, never folded.

At home

A piece this size settles well in a living or dining room, under a table or in front of a sofa group, where the red holds its depth against both dark wood and pale floors. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than kept for best. As light moves across it during the day, the mirrored corners seem to shift with the pile's sheen.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 304 × 254 cm (7.72 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 7.72 m² that is roughly 3.4 to 3.9 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
