About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 234 x 174 cm (7'8" x 5'9"). Bidjars have long been called the Iron Rugs of Persia, a name earned by a weave so dense and firmly pressed that the finished rug can only be rolled, never folded, and holds its shape for decades.
What you see
The field opens in a deep brick red, covered edge to edge in a fine diamond lattice so dense it reads first as texture, then as pattern. At its centre sits a bold, multi-pointed star medallion, its pendants reaching left and right with an unusually crisp, well-kept outline, repeating the medallion's navy, steel blue, sage green and dusty rose in miniature. Cream floral spandrels fill the corners, and a wide ivory border of navy scrollwork and floral sprays closes the field, holding its own against the red within.
How it was made
That crispness comes from the loom, not the finishing. Hand-knotted at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, each row is beaten hard against a cotton warp, packing the wool tightly enough to draw a lattice diamond almost as fine as a pencil line. A little silk runs through the wool pile — silk spins thinner than wool, so wherever it appears the knot can be tighter still, giving the medallion's edge a faint sheen the red field does not share. Kept low at 15 mm, the pile stays firm and keeps every outline sharp.
At home
This rug suits a seating group in a living room, filling the space before a sofa without crowding the walls. The brick red warms a pale wood or stone floor, while the ivory border keeps the edges light. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than kept for best. As afternoon light crosses the lattice, the silk catches what the wool does not, and the pattern seems to shift gently through the day.
