About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 350 x 252 cm (11'6" x 8'3"). The type is known in the trade as the iron rug of Persia, prized above all for a density of knotting that no other Persian weaving group attempts, and for a solidity that lets it outlast almost anything else laid on a floor. It is a tribal weaving, knotted from memory rather than a fixed plan, which makes what sits at its centre here worth pausing on.
What you see
The first impression is a deep brick red field, close-set with a fine Herati lattice, glowing outward from an ivory medallion built up in steps. Look again and that medallion is not one shape but three, nested diamonds in navy, red and ivory, each carrying its own small Herati pattern rather than sitting as a single flat centre. Dark navy spandrels anchor the corners, and a wide ivory border of palmette and vine scrollwork, in navy, red, teal and rust, holds the whole field at a clear distance. It is a more layered medallion than a Bijar usually offers, three fields working inside one another rather than one.
How it was made
That layering was only possible because of how finely this rug is knotted, at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, with silk running through the wool pile. Silk takes a far finer knot than wool alone, which is what lets a pattern this small survive at the centre of the medallion without blurring into a shape. The weave presses so tight that a Bijar cannot be folded at all, only rolled, and underfoot that same density is what gives it its weight and its long, level wear.
At home
A rug this size belongs under a dining table or anchoring a living room seating group, and this one holds its own there. The red carries warmth into a pale floor, while the ivory of the medallion lifts a room with darker furniture around it. It is dense and firm underfoot, built for a room that gets daily use rather than one kept for best. Walk around it through the day and the three nested diamonds catch the light differently from every angle, never quite the same shape twice.
