About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, the tribal and nomadic weaving of Kurdish Iran, measuring 206 x 155 cm (6'9" x 5'1"). Rugs of this type carry the name "the iron rugs of Persia", prized for a density and firmness that let them outlast almost any other Persian weave, even underfoot in a busy room.
What you see
The field opens in a deep brick red, broken by a tight lattice of navy diamonds that shifts the ground colour as it repeats. At the centre sits one large, intricately petalled medallion, its sage green and dusty rose florals touched with ochre. The four corner spandrels echo that same palette almost exactly, so the whole composition reads as strongly mirrored. A wide ivory border carries the same red and navy floral scrollwork outward, held in check by narrow black and red guard stripes.
How it was made
The pile is wool blended with silk over a cotton warp, at a density of between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre — among the tightest found in Persian weaving. Silk spins far finer than wool, so it lets the knot sit tighter still, which is why the lattice and the medallion's petals hold such crisp, exact edges. That same density presses the rug into a compact, almost board-like structure: a Bijar is never folded, only rolled, and the 15mm pile carries a faint, silken lustre across its surface.
At home
A rug this size suits a bedroom, or a corner of a living room. The brick red and navy hold their own against a pale floor, and the ivory border keeps the composition light rather than heavy. Underfoot it is dense and firm, the short pile smooth and cool, built for daily footsteps. Morning light catches the silk in the medallion first, then travels out across the lattice.
