About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, a Kurdish weaving from western Iran long known as the Iron Rug of Persia for its density and its endurance. At 302 x 199 cm (9'11" x 6'6"), it is sized for a dining table or a living room seating group, somewhere it will be seen whole. Where the type is often patterned edge to edge with no rest for the eye, this piece opens a wide, pale centre and lets it breathe.
What you see
The field runs a deep brick red, dense with a small Mahi lattice in rust, ochre, pink and green, navy spandrels pinning down each corner. At the centre the pattern gives way to a wide ivory octagon, pale and calm against the darker field, a clear point of rest in a design that could easily have felt busy. The border, broad and ivory, carries the same rust and navy back out in a floral vine scroll, framing the field rather than competing with it.
How it was made
Bidjars carry the densest knotting in the Persian tradition, and this one sits within that range at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp. That density is what keeps the small lattice sharp rather than letting it blur into the field, and it gives the ivory medallion a clean, held edge against the red around it. The wool is hand-spun and set at 15 mm, enough depth to feel substantial without softening the pattern. Bidjars of this weight are famously not folded, only rolled, so tightly are the knots pressed together.
At home
Close to three metres long, it belongs under a dining table or anchoring a seating group in a living room, where its size and its centre can both be taken in at once. The brick red holds its own against dark wood or leather, while the ivory medallion lifts a paler floor without turning pale itself. Underfoot it is dense and firm, a rug built for a room that gets used rather than one kept for best. As light crosses it through the day, that ivory centre catches first, calm in the middle of a field that never quite settles around it.

How do I care for this rug?
Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
