About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a hand-knotted Bidjar, also written Bijar or Bidjar-e Kordestan, a rug of the Kurdish regions of western Iran and one of Persia's most densely woven types — known among collectors as the iron rugs of Persia for a structure so compact it can only be rolled, never folded. This example measures 235 x 152 cm (7'9" x 5'0").

What you see

The first impression is a deep brick red, dense with a fine Mahi lattice of diamonds and rosettes in sage green, dusty pink and touches of blue. At the centre this field opens into a sharp eight-pointed star, its points cream and navy around a small red heart, set like a cut jewel within it. The same navy reappears in the four corner spandrels. A wide ivory border, dark with floral scrollwork, closes the field, framed by narrow guard stripes of red and navy.

How it was made

That clarity comes from how tightly the rug is built. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — among the densest knotting in the Persian tradition — the wool pile, finished with silk, traces the star's points and the border's scrollwork with an edge a coarser weave could not hold. The same density is why Bidjar is called an iron rug: knotted this closely onto a cotton warp, it is too compact to fold, rolled instead, and it keeps its form underfoot for decades.

At home

A rug this size suits a seating area — in front of a sofa, or a bedroom large enough to show the whole pattern. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor. Underfoot the wool-and-silk pile is dense and firm, made for daily use. As daylight crosses it, the silk catches along the star's edges, sharpening the centre before quieting again.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 235 × 152 cm (3.57 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 3.57 m² that is roughly 1.6 to 1.8 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
