About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish region of western Iran — a type nicknamed the iron rugs of Persia for a density and toughness few other weavings match. This piece measures 245 x 173 cm (8'0" x 5'8"). Bidjar rugs pair strong geometry with classical Persian floral pattern, and are prized by collectors for holding their shape and sharpness for decades.

What you see

The first impression is a deep wine-red field, into which a large ivory hexagonal medallion sits glowing at the centre. The red ground is covered edge to edge in a fine diamond lattice of small fish and rosette motifs, the Mahi pattern Bidjar is known for, with matching ivory spandrels filling each corner. Near the medallion's tips sit two small dark, pendant-like devices. A narrow navy-black border, carrying an ivory floral vine, closes the design, clearly darker than the field.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted with a cotton warp and a pile of wool blended with silk, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, high enough to explain the sharp resolution of the lattice and medallion. The pile is clipped low, to about 15 millimetres, and pressed so tightly during weaving that a Bidjar can only be rolled, never folded. Silk spins finer than wool, letting the weaver tie smaller knots and giving the surface its faint, even sheen.

At home

This rug suits a seating area in a living room, or a generous bedroom, rather than a large dining table. The wine red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, while the ivory medallion lifts a room with little daylight. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use. In afternoon light the silk in the pile catches faintly, and the medallion seems to brighten from within.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 245 × 173 cm (4.24 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 4.24 m² that is roughly 1.9 to 2.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
