About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
A Bijar runner, also written Bidjar, 242 x 82 cm (7'11" x 2'8"), knotted in the Kurdish regions of western Iran. The type has earned the name Iron Rugs of Persia: its knotting is the densest in the whole Persian tradition, pressed so tight that a finished piece cannot be folded, only rolled. This runner carries that same density into an unusually calm, ordered design, where the type is normally busier.
What you see
The field is a deep brick and madder red, filled edge to edge with a fine herati-style floral repeat in dusty rose, steel blue and dark green. Down its length march three hexagonal medallions in ivory cream, drawn to near-identical size and colour, so the sequence reads less like the crowded Bijar fields usually seen and more like a measured, architectural rhythm. A wide navy-black border closes the composition, carrying its own ivory floral vine and standing in sharp contrast against the red ground.
How it was made
Bijar weavers press the weft down hard between rows, the technique behind the type's legendary weight and resistance to wear. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, that density let this weaver draw three medallions in almost mirrored precision, rather than the looser variation usual in memory-knotted work. A thread of silk runs through the wool pile, spinning finer than wool alone, so every hexagon outline and each small floral filler stays crisp. The result is a low, tightly clipped pile with a flat matte surface and sharp, legible pattern.

At 242 x 82 cm this is a runner for a hallway or a landing, seen along its length rather than all at once. The red holds its own against dark furniture and dark floors, while the ivory medallions catch the eye and lead it forward. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made for daily passage, and the steady march of three matched hexagons is what stays with you each time you pass it.
