About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 350 x 256 cm (11'6" x 8'5"). It carries the old nickname the Iron Rug of Persia, woven so densely and pressed so firm that it is never folded, only rolled, and prized above all for holding its shape and its edge for decades.
What you see
The first impression is colour: a deep brick red carries the whole field, filled edge to edge with a fine, repeating Mahi lattice rather than gathered around a medallion. Diamonds interlock evenly across the ground in dark navy and black, with cream, rust-orange and dusty pink florals breaking the red, and small touches of teal appearing here and there without ever settling into a centre. A wide navy border closes the design, its red and cream floral scrollwork taking up close to a fifth of the width, holding the field the way a frame holds a canvas that is dense from corner to corner.
How it was made
That evenness comes from the knotting itself. This piece carries between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, among the tightest counts in the Persian tradition, closer to a fine drawing than an ordinary weave. A cotton warp gives the structure its backbone, while the pile, wool lifted with silk, lets each diamond and every turn of the border scrollwork be tied off cleanly rather than blurring at the edge. At a pile height of 15 millimetres the surface sits close and flat, heavy in the hand, and true to its name it is a rug meant to be rolled rather than folded.
At home
At 350 by 256 centimetres this is a rug for a dining room or a living room, sized to sit under a table or gather a sofa group with room to spare. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor equally well, while the navy border keeps the eye from drifting to the edges of the room. Underfoot it is dense and firm rather than soft and deep, built for a room in daily use rather than one kept for best. As daylight crosses it through the day the reds and rusts shift in warmth, while the lattice itself never loses its order.
