About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a small Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 47 x 42 cm (18½" x 16½"). Known across Persian weaving as the toughest of all, the type is knotted so dense and firmly pressed that it can only be rolled, never folded. That same weight sits here in a piece small enough to hold in two hands.
What you see
The first impression is a moss-green field, warmed by brick-red roses and crossed on one side by a narrow pale-blue stream. Within it a fawn leaps away, a white hound close behind, moving through a garden of rose bushes. A navy-blue border of floral vine and red roses closes the scene, framed by cream guard stripes and an outer band of moss green, together close to a fifth of the width. Fine gold thread traces the fawn's antler and legs, catching the light as it moves.
How it was made
This piece was knotted from memory, so the fawn's stride and the hound's reach are drawn freehand, never quite repeated — a design carried only in the weaver's head. Even at this size the knotting runs to 161,000-200,000 knots per square metre, dense enough to hold the curve of an antler or a single rose stem. Hand-spun wool, slightly uneven in thickness, gives the pile its light sheen, and at 15 mm it sits thick and firm on a cotton foundation, weighty for something so small.
At home
A piece this size belongs in a study, or beside a favourite chair, close enough for the chase across it to be followed in detail. The moss green settles quietly against dark wood, and the brick red and gold keep it lively. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than display, and in low evening light the gold thread along the fawn's legs catches and holds, the scene seeming to move as the light does.
