About This Bidjar
Where it comes from
This is a Bijar runner, also written Bidjar, hand-knotted in the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, 241 x 71 cm (7'11" x 2'4"). Bijar rugs are known across the Persian tradition as the "Iron Rugs of Persia," prized for a density and weight that let them hold their shape and sharpness for decades, even underfoot in the busiest of rooms.
What you see
The field is a deep brick red, laid out in a fine Mahi lattice of stylised fish and rosettes. Down its length march three star-shaped medallions in dark navy, each centred on a cream ivory field, spaced with the same even rhythm from top to bottom. Salmon-pink and rust florals and small touches of teal sit within the lattice around them. A wide navy border, filled with small floral palmettes and edged by a thin ivory guard stripe, holds the red field firmly in place.
How it was made
Bijar rugs are the most densely knotted in the whole Persian tradition, and this piece sits at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre — a structure so compact that a Bijar can only be rolled, never folded flat. The pile is wool worked with silk, finer than wool alone, which let the weaver draw each medallion's edge sharp and keep the three repeats identical rather than merging into the field. At fifteen millimetres deep, the pile still carries real weight in the hand.
At home
A runner this size suits a hallway or landing, somewhere it will be walked across rather than admired. The brick red warms a corridor with little daylight, while the navy medallions catch the eye down its length. Dense and firm underfoot, it is built for daily use, and the silk in the pile gives each medallion a quiet lift as the light crosses it.
