About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bidjar, also written Bijar, from the Kurdish weavers of western Iran, measuring 293 x 200 cm (9'7" x 6'7"). The type is nicknamed the iron rug of Persia, prized for a structure so dense it can only be rolled, never folded, and known for holding its shape through decades of hard use.

What you see

The field is a warm brick red, covered edge to edge with a fine diamond lattice in the Mahi style, each diamond outlined in darker brick red with small touches of green and pale blue. There is no medallion; the pattern runs steadily across the whole ground rather than gathering toward a centre. A broad navy-blue border frames it, carrying a cream floral vine with paisley-like leaves, and the surface has a fine, even weave with a slight sheen along the motif outlines.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, hand-knotted onto a cotton foundation at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, among the higher counts in Persian weaving and the reason a Bidjar can only be rolled, not folded. That density explains the lattice's steadiness: most Mahi patterns drift slightly from row to row, but this one holds a consistency closer to a workshop drawing, fixed by the tight knotting beneath. At 15 millimetres the pile stays low and firm rather than soft, letting so fine a pattern stay sharp underfoot.

At home

At just under three metres by two, this Bidjar suits a dining table or a living room seating group. The brick red holds its own against dark wood or leather and warms a pale floor without overwhelming it. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily use rather than a room kept for best, and as afternoon light crosses it, the navy border and the fine lattice catch a quiet sheen along their outlines.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 293 × 200 cm (5.86 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 5.86 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
