About This Bidjar

Where it comes from

This is a Bijar, also written Bidjar, from the Kurdish weaving regions of western Iran, measuring 292 x 226 cm (9'7" x 7'5"). The type has earned itself the name Iron Rug of Persia, woven so densely that a Bijar cannot be folded, only rolled. Here that famous density carries a field paired with a border wider than the type usually allows itself.

What you see

Seen across a room, a deep brick and wine red dominates, crossed by a fine navy lattice that repeats without a medallion - the classic Mahi, or fish, pattern, drawn small and close so the field reads almost as woven texture before it reads as pattern. The eye then reaches a wide cream border, carrying a rust-red floral vine touched with navy, sage green and dusty peach, held in place by several narrow guard stripes.

How it was made

Bijar carries the densest knotting in the Persian tradition; this piece runs at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, enough to draw the Mahi lattice small and keep every diamond crisp. The pile is wool run through with silk, which spins finer and holds a sharper knot, so the lattice keeps its edge and the border vine its drawing. Hand-knotted on a cotton warp, the pile stands 15 mm, pressed close and firm - the same density that lets a Bijar be rolled, never folded.

At home

A rug this size and this dense belongs under a dining table, or anchoring a sofa group in a living room. Against pale flooring the brick and wine reds bring real warmth; the cream border keeps it from feeling heavy. Underfoot it is firm and substantial, built for daily use rather than careful stepping. In low afternoon light the silk catches, and the lattice seems to shift again.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 292 × 226 cm (6.60 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 6.60 m² that is roughly 2.9 to 3.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
