About This Senneh

Where it comes from

This is a Senneh rug, also spelled Seneh, hand-knotted in Kurdish western Iran, 151 x 127 cm (4'11" x 4'2"). Woven in and around Sanandaj, Senneh is named among the first when the finest Persian weaving is discussed, admired for a precision of drawing close to painting. Most Senneh work carries that fineness across one even, all-over repeat. This piece does something bolder.

What you see

The first impression is a bold grid of alternating panels, black against steel blue, each holding its own spray of rust and salmon-pink flowers around a small cream rosette. The panels run in arched columns down the field, dark and pale ground trading places row by row, so the eye reads the rug as a checkerboard of colour before it reads the flowers within it. A wide rust-red border closes the field, carrying its own floral vine between two narrow navy guard stripes.

How it was made

That graphic clarity rests on a cotton warp fine enough to hold the tightly set asymmetric knot the region is known for, sometimes called the Senneh knot. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the weaver could turn each rosette and stem into its own small drawing rather than a blur of colour. The wool is hand-spun and kept to a modest 12 mm pile, which is why the surface stays matte rather than taking on any sheen.

At home

A rug this size suits a study, or a quiet corner of a bedroom, somewhere it can be read up close rather than crossed in passing. Against pale floors the black and steel-blue grounds hold their own, while the rust and salmon flowers keep the room warm. Underfoot it is dense, low and firm, built for daily use, and the hand-spun wool catches the light differently from panel to panel.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 151 × 127 cm (1.92 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 1.92 m² that is roughly 390,000 to 480,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
