About This Sannandadj

Where it comes from

This is a Sanandaj rug, hand-knotted in the Kurdish provincial capital of Iran once known as Senneh, home to some of the finest city weaving to come out of Kurdistan. It measures 303 x 197 cm (9'11" x 6'6"). Where Sanandaj work is usually set on an ivory or red ground, this piece runs unusually dark.

What you see

A near-black brown field, touched with aubergine, carries an all-over Mahi lattice in cream and soft brown-black, the classic fish pattern repeating edge to edge. Set over it, a large stepped-diamond medallion builds outward from a slate-blue centre through salmon to cream, giving it real weight rather than a flat outline. Around the field runs a salmon-pink border of floral rosettes, lighter and warmer than the ground it frames, closed in by narrow guard stripes in cream, powder-blue and dark brown.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted on a cotton warp, with a hand-spun wool pile clipped to twelve millimetres, keeping the medallion's stepped edges sharp rather than soft. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the density is fine enough for a city workshop to draw the lattice and the nested diamonds precisely, so the colour moves from slate-blue through salmon to cream in clean bands rather than blurring together. That precision is what lets the medallion hold its shape against a dark ground.

At home

A rug of this size suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room. Against a pale floor, the dark aubergine ground holds its own, while the salmon and slate medallion keeps the room from feeling heavy. Underfoot the pile is short and dense, firm enough for daily use. As daylight moves across it, the medallion shifts gently from slate-blue into salmon.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 303 × 197 cm (5.97 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 5.97 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
