About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain from central Iran, 231 x 200 cm (7'7" x 6'7"), hand-knotted in a town that came late to weaving and swiftly became a byword for refinement, known above all for silk laid into fine wool and for drawing of unusual precision. Nain is a design normally built around a central medallion. This piece has none — the pattern runs unbroken from edge to edge, with nothing at its centre to gather the eye.
What you see
The field opens in a warm ivory, quickly filled with a dense scrolling of steel and dusty blue florals set so closely that the ground reads almost as lace. Small rosette clusters repeat on a diagonal rhythm rather than converging on any one point, so the eye travels across the rug instead of settling. Rust-red and dark navy show only in fine outline, and camel tones warm the scrollwork here and there. The border, worked in the same cream and steel-blue, takes up the same floral vine rather than framing it in contrast, so field and border run into one another with barely a seam.
How it was made
A wool and silk pile on a cotton warp, knotted by hand at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, is what makes a pattern this fine legible without a medallion to hold it together. Silk spins thinner than wool, so it takes a tighter knot, and at this density the scrolling outlines stay crisp rather than softening into blur even at close range. The silk is worked along the vine itself, which is where the faint sheen across the field comes from, rather than any single lit motif. At 8 mm the pile stays low enough for the drawing to read cleanly, and being a recent piece, the wool and silk are still fresh, the ivory and blue holding their original clarity.
