About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, also written Na'in, a city workshop weaving from central Iran, hand-knotted in wool with silk highlights on a cotton foundation. It measures 236 x 170 cm (7'9" x 5'7"). Nain is graded by fineness in "La" steps, and the finer gradings are among the most sought-after of all Persian workshop rugs, prized for precise floral medallion drawing rather than for bold colour.

What you see

Here the usual ivory ground gives way to a deep navy field, kept largely open so that a bold ivory sunburst medallion floats at its centre without competition. Floral vine scrollwork, in dusty rose, sage-grey and camel, drifts across the navy rather than filling it, and the same soft palette returns in the ivory corner spandrels. A wide cream border, worked with matching florals and rosettes, is framed by narrow guard stripes in grey-blue and pink, warm against the dark field.

How it was made

A knot density of 441,000 to 500,000 per square metre lets the workshop draw the medallion's outline and the finest floral tendrils with precision, silk carrying the highlights because it spins finer than wool and holds a sharper edge. Wool fills the rest of the pile, clipped to 12 millimetres and finished smooth and even, so the navy ground reads as one clean plane rather than a busy surface. This discipline, not empty space, keeps so dense a pattern looking calm.

At home

At 236 x 170 cm this suits a seating area in a living room, or a quiet bedroom. The navy ground holds its own against dark furniture and pale floors, and the ivory medallion lifts the colour without competing. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, ready for daily use. Daylight moving across the room catches the silk highlights, and the border's rose and camel tones seem to shift through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 236 × 170 cm (4.01 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 4.01 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
