About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain, also written Na'in, from the workshop city of that name in central Iran, measuring 250 x 200 cm (8'2" x 6'7"). Nain rugs are graded by fineness in "La" steps — the lower the number, the tighter the knot — and known for silk worked into a wool pile, usually in ivory and blue. Here the palette runs paler than usual, closer to pastel than the deep ivory-and-navy most Nains show.
What you see
The first impression is of air rather than pattern: an open ivory field carrying little beyond a single scalloped medallion in soft powder blue, floating free of any corner ornament. Around it, floral vinework in the same blue fills the spandrels, touched with dusty rose, muted rust and sage green. The wide border repeats the blue in a multi-band floral meander, dense enough to frame the field without competing with its calm.
How it was made
That calm took as much work as any dense pattern would. The pile is wool with silk worked through it, and silk spins far finer than wool, letting the weaver draw a tighter, more exact line at the same knot count. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, on a cotton warp with the pile kept to 8 mm, this is unusually fine — enough to let a medallion this size sit alone in an open field without reading as bare.
At home
This suits a seating area in a living room, or the foot of a bed, somewhere it can be seen whole rather than glimpsed under a table. Ivory lifts a pale floor and holds its own against darker furniture, while the powder blue stays quiet rather than commanding the room. The pile is short, dense and firm underfoot, made for daily use rather than for looking at from the doorway. As light crosses it through the day, the silk in the medallion catches first, and the pattern seems to breathe with the room around it.
