About This Nain
Where it comes from
Nain is Persia's byword for refined, city-workshop weaving, and its rugs are almost always recognised by a cool palette of ivory and blue. This one, 193 x 200 cm (6'4" x 6'7"), breaks from that expectation with a deep wine-red field, though the fineness of the drawing is pure Nain. Woven to the 6La standard, among the tightest classifications the town produces, it is also a genuinely square format, drawn as a formal medallion centrepiece rather than a long room rug.
What you see
The wine-red ground carries the eye straight to a large round medallion, its ivory-and-red body wrapped in dense floral vinework picked out in steel blue-grey, with touches of rust and dusty rose worked into the smaller motifs. Ivory spandrels echo the same florals at the corners, holding the medallion in place against the red. A broad ivory border, filled with fine scrollwork in the same blue-grey and rust tones, runs the full width around the field, taking up close to a fifth of the rug and giving the red centre a calm, generous frame.
How it was made
That precision comes from wool spun fine and knotted at a density of 641,000 to 800,000 knots per square metre, then lifted with silk. Silk threads spin thinner than wool, so a workshop can knot to a finer resolution wherever silk is used, which is what gives the medallion's outline and the border scrollwork their crispness. On a cotton warp, at a 6 mm pile, that density represents months of steady work at the loom, not a rug hurried through production.
At home
At close to two metres square, this rug reads as a centrepiece rather than a border piece, equally at home under a round dining table or anchoring a seating group in a living room. The wine-red is unusual for a Nain, and it behaves differently in a room too, holding its own against dark wood or leather rather than needing a pale floor to lift it. Underfoot the pile is dense, fine and even, firm enough for a room in regular use rather than one kept for best. Where the light catches the silk, the blue-grey tracery lifts briefly off the red, a quiet effect that repeats every time the sun moves across the floor.
