About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, the city-workshop rug from the town of Nain in central Iran, here 356 x 247 cm (11'8" x 8'1"). Nain built its reputation on fine wool lifted with silk and on floral drawing of unusual precision, almost always set against an ivory ground. This piece reverses that convention: the ground is a deep, near-black navy, and the pattern is carried on dark rather than pale.
What you see
The first impression is of that navy field, densely worked over in fine ivory and pale blue scrollwork, before the eye settles on a large lobed medallion at the centre. Two smaller medallions flank it along the horizontal axis, a tripartite arrangement Nain workshops use far less often than the usual single medallion with pendants above and below. Small terracotta and red flowers break the ivory and blue drawing at intervals, warm notes against the cold ground. A wide ivory border, filled with floral cartouches and rosettes and taking up roughly a fifth of the rug's width, closes the design in a band of light around all that dark.
How it was made
The knotting runs to 441,000–500,000 knots per square metre, a density that lets the weaver draw vine and blossom in wool this fine without the lines softening into one another, even against a navy this dark. Silk, spun far thinner than wool, is worked through the highlights and picks up light where plain wool would sit flat, giving the ivory scrollwork its faint sheen. Cotton carries the foundation, keeping the piece stable under a pile clipped to an even 10 mm. Months of work sit behind that density, all of it in service of a field colour most Nain workshops do not attempt.
At home
A rug this size belongs under a dining table or anchoring a seating group in a living room, and the navy ground does real work in either setting: it grounds a pale floor and holds its own against dark furniture rather than disappearing next to it. Underfoot the pile is dense, fine and smooth, built for a room in regular use rather than for display alone. Where the light crosses it, the silk catches first, and the ivory scrollwork seems to lift very slightly off the navy beneath it.
