About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, hand-knotted in the city workshops of central Iran, 201 x 198 cm (6'7" x 6'6") — close enough to square that it reads as a single, self-contained field rather than a rectangle. Nain built its name on precision: fine wool grounds lifted with silk, drawn from a cartoon rather than improvised, and usually finished in the ivory-and-blue palette this piece carries. What sets this one apart is how strictly ordered that precision has been allowed to become.
What you see
The field is a deep navy, almost black-blue, carrying a dense vine of palmettes, rosettes and serrated leaves that covers the ground edge to edge with no central medallion to anchor it. Look closer and the vine is not scattered but mirrored, top to bottom and side to side, so the scrollwork settles into a near-kaleidoscopic order rather than the looser, freely wandering growth Nain rugs usually show. That discipline continues into the border: a wide ivory band of floral vine, held on either side by narrow stripes of blue-grey, sand-beige and black, giving a clean, confident contrast against the dark field.
How it was made
That kind of mirrored precision is only possible because the design was drawn and followed, not worked from memory, and because the pile itself is fine enough to hold it. The knotting here runs to 441,000–500,000 knots per square metre, and the pile is wool lifted with silk rather than wool alone — silk spins far thinner than wool, so it takes a tighter knot and holds a sharper edge, which is why the pale scrollwork keeps such crisp outlines and a faint, controlled sheen. At an 8 mm pile height the surface stays low and even, exactly what fine outline work like this needs to read clearly rather than blur.

At close to two metres square, this rug suits a seating group in a living room or a study rather than a long dining run, sitting centred rather than stretched. The navy holds its own against dark wood or leather, while the ivory border does the opposite work, throwing light back into the room even where daylight is limited.
