About This Nain
Where it comes from
Nain is Persia's most refined city weave, made in workshops from a drawn cartoon rather than from memory, and its hallmark is a pale, cultivated palette of ivory and blue lifted by fine silk highlights on wool. This piece measures 250 x 170 cm (8'2" x 5'7"), a size suited to a seating group or a smaller dining table. Where a Nain of this quality is almost always built on a cream ground, here the design has been set against deep navy, giving the same fine drawing considerably more graphic weight.
What you see
The field reads as a rich, dark navy, and against it the ivory medallion sits with unusual clarity, its spandrels filled with dense floral scrollwork in powder and steel blue. Inside the medallion, small red flowers break the cool palette, a detail that would barely register on a pale ground but holds the eye here. The composition is framed by a broad ivory border, itself built from several concentric bands of fine floral ornament, and the contrast between that pale border and the navy field gives the rug a presence that the usual cream-ground version of this design does not have.
How it was made
This is hand-knotted work, wool with silk highlights on a cotton warp, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre. Silk spins far finer than wool, so wherever it appears the knotting can tighten and the outline sharpen, which is why the medallion's edge stays so crisp against the dark field rather than softening into it. At this density, a rug this size represents months of steady work at the loom, and it shows in how cleanly the scrollwork and border bands are drawn. A pile height of just 12 mm keeps the surface even and the pattern legible from across a room.
At home
In a living or dining room, this navy ground gives the rug the confidence to hold its own against dark wood or upholstery, while the ivory medallion and border lift a pale floor rather than disappearing into it. The pile is fine, dense and smooth underfoot, firm enough for regular use beneath a table or in front of a sofa. As light moves across it through the day, the silk highlights catch and shift faintly along the scrollwork, so the navy field never quite sits still.
