About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain, from the city of that name in central Iran, 299 x 251 cm (9'10" x 8'3"). Nain built its reputation over the past century on fine wool touched with silk, drawn into filigree florals of ivory and blue, and this piece carries that colouring exactly. What sets it apart from the type is its layout: no medallion sits at the centre to gather the eye, only an even field that carries the same quiet density from edge to edge.
What you see
The field is a soft ivory, and across it runs a fine Mahi lattice of steel-blue and slate-grey scrollwork, a scrolling vine pattern repeated without a break. Small navy accents mark the turns, brick-red dots appear here and there among the tracery, and pale sage leaf tips soften the blue. There is no medallion, no spandrel, nothing to stop the rhythm or claim more attention than its neighbour. A wide border in the same ivory and steel-blue floral tracery frames the field, close enough in tone that it holds the design rather than interrupting it.
How it was made
That evenness is harder to achieve than a medallion, which only demands precision at the centre. Here the knotting has to hold its fineness across the whole field, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, wool carrying silk highlights on a cotton foundation. Silk takes a finer twist than wool, which is what lets the vine tracery stay crisp at this scale rather than blurring at the edges. A pile clipped to 12 millimetres keeps the outlines sharp and gives the surface its light, even sheen.
