About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, also written Na'in, the fine city-workshop weave of central Iran, here in a generous 294 x 248 cm (9'8" x 8'2"). Nain rugs are woven from a cartoon in wool touched with silk, graded by their fineness in "La" numbers, and prized above nearly every other Persian type for the precision of their floral drawing.
What you see
The first impression is an ivory field carrying a dense scrolling vine of rosettes and palmettes, with no medallion to anchor the eye. The scrollwork runs in navy and steel-blue, touched with rust, dusty rose and sage, drawn as a fine, unbroken line. The palette stays close enough in tone that the effect reads as quiet rather than busy. A wide floral border in matching ivory and beige, closed by a thin navy guard stripe, holds the field without adding contrast of its own.
How it was made
The restraint is a matter of construction as much as choice. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand onto a cotton warp, the weavers could draw the vine's outlines as fine, closed lines rather than the blocky shapes coarser knotting allows. The pile itself is wool lifted with silk, 12 mm deep; here the silk is kept to highlights within the drawing rather than laid across it for shine, which is why the surface stays matte and even rather than glossy.
At home
A rug this size suits a dining or living room, under a table or in front of a sofa group, seen daily rather than glimpsed in passing. Its ivory ground lifts a pale floor and holds against darker wood. Underfoot it is dense and firm, closely woven for daily use. In the evening a lamp finds the silk within the vine, catching just enough light to remind you it is there.
