About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, a city-workshop rug from the small weaving town of that name in central Iran, long known for fine wool grounds lifted by silk highlights and for floral drawing worked to a very fine hand. At 249 x 200 cm (8'2" x 6'7"), it is a room rug rather than a runner or a small accent piece. Nain is usually recognised for covering its whole field in dense scrollwork; this piece keeps that fineness but spends it differently.
What you see
The first impression is a large navy medallion afloat on a pale cream field, its outline broken into overlapping palmettes so the edge reads as lace rather than a plain curve. Ivory scrollwork fills the medallion itself, fine and dense against the dark ground, while the field around it stays open, so the medallion carries the eye instead of competing with a busier surround. A wide camel-tan border closes the composition, filled with alternating palmettes and rosettes, held in by narrow guard stripes of cream and pale blue that separate it cleanly from the field.
How it was made
Getting that contrast right takes a particular kind of knotting. The pile is wool with silk, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre. Silk spins far finer than wool, so where it runs through the scrollwork it holds a sharper edge than wool alone would allow, which is why the medallion's scalloped outline stays crisp rather than blurring into the field. A density in that range means several hundred thousand knots for every square metre, months of work set into a piece a little over two metres square, and it is that fineness that lets the open field around the medallion stay calm without ever going soft.
At home
A rug at this size suits a living room, under a seating group where the medallion can sit at the centre of the room rather than under a table leg. The cream field lifts a pale floor and gives dark furniture something light to sit against, while the camel border warms the whole arrangement without shouting over the navy. At 12 mm the pile is fine and low, dense underfoot rather than deep, better suited to a room used for sitting and talking than to constant heavy traffic. Move a lamp across it in the evening and the silk in the scrollwork catches first, so the medallion seems to lift slightly off the field.
