About This Nain
Where it comes from
Nain is Persia's city workshop for refinement rather than boldness, a comparatively young weaving town that became shorthand for luxury through fine wool touched with silk, drawn to a cartoon rather than worked from memory. The colour most associated with it is a cool ivory and blue. This piece, 202 x 130 cm (6'8" x 4'3"), belongs to that tradition of drawing and precision, but it has been set on a ground the type rarely shows.
What you see
The field is a deep wine red, dense enough to read almost as burgundy, and against it sits a large eight-pointed star medallion in ivory, a small navy rosette marking its exact centre. Fine floral vine scrollwork covers the whole ground, the mahi motif running through it in miniature, and matching floral spandrels fill the corners. A wide ivory border, close to a fifth of the rug's width, carries the same vine ornament in navy and a lighter steel-blue, with cartouches breaking the run at intervals, and it is this pale band that throws the red field into such sharp relief.
How it was made
At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, the drawing here is fine enough to hold the star's points crisp and the vine's smallest turns legible, work that takes a weaver months rather than weeks. The pile is wool with silk worked through the lighter motifs, and it is the silk that carries the faint sheen visible across the medallion and border, because it takes dye and catches light differently from wool and so is reserved for the details meant to lift. A cotton warp keeps the weave stable under a pile kept to 12 mm, low enough to hold the pattern's edges sharp rather than softening them.

A rug this size and this coloured suits a bedroom or a quiet seating corner rather than a large open floor, laid where it can be seen whole. Against pale flooring the red holds real weight in the room without needing dark furniture to support it, and the ivory medallion keeps it from ever feeling heavy.
