About This Nain
Where it comes from
Nain is Persia's most refined city weave, a workshop tradition barely a century old that established itself almost immediately as shorthand for luxury. This piece measures 283 x 197 cm (9'3" x 6'5"), a size suited to a dining table or a seating group. Nain is known for silk highlights worked into a fine wool pile, graded by "La" number for fineness, and for a palette that is almost always ivory and blue. This one departs from that habit at the centre.
What you see
The field is a deep navy, almost black, and the medallion sitting on it is worked in the same dark tone, so it declares itself through the density and direction of the ivory floral scrollwork rather than through any change of colour. That scrollwork spreads outward into a paler ivory ground, still carrying the same vine and blossom motifs, before meeting a wide border banded in ivory and filled with fine rosettes in pale blue-grey and touches of rust. The result is a far more graphic contrast than the softer ivory-and-blue Nain usually offers, dark against light rather than pale against pale.
How it was made
This is hand-knotted, wool and silk on a cotton warp, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, roughly one knot for every two millimetres across the surface. Silk spins finer than wool, so it can carry the tight turns of the vine work and the crisp edge around each rosette, and a pile kept to 12 mm keeps that drawing sharp rather than softening it into the wool. That density, sustained over the whole field, represents months of knotting on a piece this size.
At home
In a living or dining room, the navy holds its own against dark furniture and does not fade under low light the way a paler ground would, while the ivory border still lifts the space around it. Underfoot the pile is short, even and smooth, dense enough for a room that gets daily use rather than one kept for best. Move around it through the day and the silk catches the light differently at each turn, so the medallion never sits quite still.
