About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, from the workshop city in central Iran that has, within little more than a century, become shorthand for the finest weaving the country produces. The type is known for silk worked into a wool pile and for a knot so fine it is graded on its own scale, the La number, with the lowest counts commanding the most attention. This piece measures 254 x 196 cm (8'4" x 6'5").
What you see
The first impression is not the ivory calm most Nain carry, but a deep navy field, where the type usually keeps to cream or pale blue. Out of that darkness a starburst medallion opens in ivory, its points reaching across a ground filled with fine scrolling vines. Around it runs a wide ivory border worked in the same floral scrollwork and small palmettes, framed by narrower guard stripes in soft camel and grey-blue, with the faintest flecks of red caught in the outer line.
How it was made
That contrast depends on the density behind it. Nain workshops pick out their finest lines in silk rather than wool, because silk spins thinner and lets the knot close tighter, and here the count runs to as much as 500,000 knots per square metre, worked over a cotton warp. At that fineness the ivory medallion holds a hard, clean edge against the navy instead of dissolving into it, and a pile kept to 12 millimetres lets the drawing stay sharp rather than soften into depth. Weaving to this count is measured in months at the loom, not weeks.
At home
A piece this size settles easily into a living room seating area, anchoring a sofa and a pair of chairs rather than stretching to a full dining table. Against pale flooring the navy field holds its ground instead of receding, and the ivory medallion lifts a room that might otherwise read as cool or plain. Underfoot the wool and silk pile is dense and even, firm enough for daily use rather than a piece to tiptoe around. As daylight moves across it through the day, the silk catches in turn along the scrollwork, so the medallion never quite looks the same twice.
