About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, the fine city-workshop weave from central Iran, 237 x 170 cm (7'9" x 5'7"). Nain is graded by fineness in La-numbers and is best known for silk drawn through a wool pile, almost always against an ivory ground with touches of blue. Here that convention is reversed: the field is a deep, near-black navy, unusual for the type and rare to find at this size.

What you see

The first impression is of dense ivory scrollwork spreading edge to edge across that dark ground, with no central medallion to interrupt it. Fine floral vines, drawn in the mahi tradition, repeat evenly across the whole field, so the eye travels rather than settles on one point. A wide, multi-band border frames this: ivory palmettes alternate with narrow guard stripes in soft grey-blue and pale red, strong enough to hold their own against the field rather than simply enclosing it.

How it was made

The density runs to 441,000–500,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand onto a cotton warp, in wool with silk brought through the highlights. Silk spins far finer than wool, so wherever it appears the drawing sharpens, and it is this that lets the scrollwork keep its curl and its point against a ground this dark, rather than blurring into it. A pile of 12 millimetres keeps that fine drawing close to the surface instead of softened under depth. At this density, a piece of this size means months of steady work at the loom.

At home

A rug of this size suits a seating group in a living room, or the space beneath a dining table where the pattern can be looked down into. The near-black field holds its own against dark wood or leather, and against a pale floor it grounds the room rather than disappearing into it, while the ivory scrollwork keeps drawing the eye back. Underfoot the pile is fine, dense and firm, built to be walked on rather than kept for best. Watch it through the day: as the light moves, the silk highlights catch and let the pattern step forward, then settle back.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 237 × 170 cm (4.03 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 4.03 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
