About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain, from the small city of that name in central Iran, 215 x 197 cm (7'1" x 6'6"). Nain is a comparatively young weaving town that became, within a generation, a byword for the most refined end of Persian carpet making, and this piece is drawn in the fine, all-over Mahi pattern the town is known for, but in a near-square format rather than the long rectangle the design usually takes.
What you see
The field is a warm ivory, densely covered in small rosettes and scrolling serrated leaves worked in slate blue, with touches of soft tan and, here and there inside the rosettes, a small point of brick red. There is no medallion to anchor the eye, so the pattern reads as one continuous, even surface, and because the rug is nearly square rather than elongated, that repeat settles into a calm, balanced field rather than the marching, corridor-like rhythm Mahi designs normally have. A wide border in the same cream tone carries the pattern's floral vine outward, held back from the field by a slim dark guard stripe, the contrast throughout deliberately gentle rather than sharp.
How it was made
That calm comes from the drawing and the knotting together. The pile is wool lifted with silk, and silk takes a far finer thread than wool alone, which is what lets a workshop draw rosettes and leaf serrations this small and still keep every line clean at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, a density that puts the piece among the finer end of Nain weaving. A cotton warp keeps the foundation stable under that fine a knot, and a pile kept low, at 12 mm, lets the drawing sit flush and sharp rather than soft at the edges, which is exactly what gives the field its smooth, almost painted evenness from a distance.
At home
Being near-square rather than the usual long Mahi shape, this rug suits a room where a rectangle would sit awkwardly: under a round or square dining table, in a seating group, or on the floor of a bedroom or study where a length would overwhelm the space. The ivory ground lifts a room with little natural light and stays quiet under darker furniture rather than competing with it. Underfoot it is dense, even and firm, built for daily use rather than display, and as the light shifts across the day the pale field takes on a soft, changing sheen that keeps the pattern gently alive.
