About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, a fine city-workshop rug from central Iran, 251 x 199 cm (8'3" x 6'6"). Nain built its name on precision: wool grounds lifted with silk highlights, knotted to a drawn plan rather than from memory, in the ivory-and-blue palette the town is known for. Most Nain rugs keep that ivory ground; this one is set instead on a deep navy field.
What you see
The first impression is of that navy holding its own, with no medallion to interrupt it. Across the field runs a dense floral vine, palmettes and serrated leaves scrolling from edge to edge in ivory, beige, rust-red and pale blue, the classic Mahi lattice worked without a break. A wide ivory border repeats the same vine, held between narrow pale blue and beige guard stripes, and against the dark field that pale frame reads with unusual clarity.
How it was made
Holding a drawing this fine required close knotting: 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, hand-knotted in wool blended with silk over a cotton warp. Silk spins thinner than wool, so it lets the weaver keep the outline of each palmette and serrated leaf sharp at a small scale, rather than letting it soften into the ground. At an 8 mm pile height the surface stays low enough to carry that detail cleanly, with a light lustre where the silk catches against the wool's matte body, sharpest along the vine itself.
At home
A rug this size suits a living room under a seating group, or a dining table where the pattern can be seen in full. The navy holds its own against dark wood furniture and just as readily warms a paler floor, without needing a medallion to anchor the room around it. Underfoot the pile is dense, fine and firm, built for daily use rather than for keeping under glass. As daylight crosses it, the silk catches first along the vine and the guard stripes before settling back into the wool, so the rug reads slightly differently through the day.
