About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain, from the small workshop town of that name in central Iran, 252 x 200 cm (8'3" x 6'7"). Nain built its reputation in the twentieth century on fine wool touched with silk, graded by "La" number for how tightly it is knotted, and almost always shown on an ivory or pale blue ground. This piece keeps the silk and the fine drawing but sets them against a field of deep navy, near black, which is not how the type is usually seen.
What you see
The first impression is of a large, pale medallion suspended on that dark field, its outline crisp against the near-black wool around it. Cream and soft blue-grey scrollwork fills the ground beneath it, dense but never crowding the medallion itself, with small touches of rust-red and dusty blue worked into the florals. A wide border in cream and camel, built up in several framing bands of floral vine, closes the design and takes up close to a fifth of the whole rug, its lighter tone standing well clear of the dark field inside it.
How it was made
The density here runs to 441,000–500,000 knots per square metre, a level that lets a weaver draw a floral line and turn it cleanly rather than blur it, which is what the fine scrollwork on the medallion needed. Silk is spun far finer than wool, so the highlights worked through the pile can carry that same precision even against so dark a ground, where a coarser yarn would simply lose the detail into the navy. Wool and silk together on a cotton foundation, at 8 mm of pile, also give the surface its light, even sheen rather than a flat matte finish.
At home
At this size the rug suits a living room seating group or the foot of a bed rather than a full dining table, and the near-black field holds its own against dark wood or dark upholstery without disappearing the way a pale Nain sometimes does in a dim room. Underfoot the pile is dense and smooth, firm rather than deep, better suited to a room that is lived in quietly than to constant heavy traffic. As daylight moves across it through the day, the silk in the medallion catches the light in a way the wool around it does not, so the pale shape at the centre never sits quite still.
