About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain from central Iran, 290 x 215 cm (9'6" x 7'1"), the town whose name has come to stand for the most refined end of Persian weaving. Nain rugs are graded by fineness in "La" steps, the lower the number the tighter the knot, and are known above all for silk worked into a wool pile in a palette of ivory and blue. This one carries no central medallion at all, the whole field given over to pattern instead.
What you see
The field is ivory, cool and even, and it is covered edge to edge with a fine Mahi lattice of scrolling vines and palmettes, drawn so densely that there is no single point for the eye to settle on. Only at the midpoint of each border side does a small cross-shaped medallion appear, quietly marking the horizontal and vertical axes without ever becoming a centre. Around it runs a wide apricot-tan border, held between a blue-grey guard stripe and a narrower cream one, the warmer tone framing the pale field rather than competing with it.
How it was made
This is hand-knotted, wool crossed with silk on a cotton warp, at a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre. Silk takes a finer thread than wool, and it is what lets a drawing this intricate stay crisp rather than blur at the edges, the outlines of each palmette and vine holding their shape even at this scale. A field this evenly worked, with no medallion to anchor the design, depends entirely on that consistency of knotting to read as calm rather than busy, and a pile clipped to 12 mm keeps the whole surface level enough for the pattern to sit flat and legible.
At home
At this size the rug belongs under a dining table or in front of a sofa group, in a living or dining room with room to see the whole field at once. The ivory ground lifts a room with darker floors or furniture, and holds its own without needing strong colour of its own to do it. Underfoot the pile is dense and even, firm rather than deep, and suited to a room that sees regular use rather than one kept for best. In changing light the lattice catches the silk unevenly across its surface, so the same pattern never quite looks the same twice in a day.
