About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, a city-workshop rug from the small Persian town that has become shorthand for refined, closely drawn design. Nain pieces are usually pale and airy, ivory-dominant with blue held mostly in the drawing; this one turns that balance around, letting a deep navy field carry the composition instead. It measures 308 x 199 cm (10'1" x 6'6"), a size that reads as generous rather than large.
What you see
The first impression is of a large ivory medallion glowing against that navy ground, the field around it worked in dense, finely scaled floral scrollwork and palmettes in the mahi manner. Rose-pink and dusty blue-grey soften the scrolls, with small touches of red set into the foliage. The medallion and the field vines share the same cream and rose palette, so the centre reads less like a separate shape laid on top and more like a lighter passage within the same dense drawing. A wide ivory border, patterned with repeating palmette and vine ornament, closes the design and is set off by several thin guard stripes.
How it was made
The pile is wool, lifted by silk worked through the highlights, a combination Nain is built on because silk spins far finer than wool and can trace an outline that wool alone cannot hold. Knotted by hand at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre and clipped to a short 12 mm pile, the rug carries the crisp, almost drawn edges visible across the scrollwork and the medallion's rim. That density, on a cotton warp, is what lets a navy field this dark stay legible rather than muddy.
At home
A rug of this size sits naturally under a dining table or in front of a sofa group, and here the deep navy will hold its own against dark wood or dark upholstery rather than disappearing beside it, while the ivory medallion and border lift the room around it. Underfoot the pile is dense, smooth and firm, well suited to a room in regular use. As daylight moves across it through the day, the silk highlights catch and shift, so the scrollwork never quite looks the same twice.
