About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, a city-workshop rug from the small Persian town of the same name, long regarded as the source of some of the finest wool-and-silk weaving to come out of Iran. This piece measures 249 x 198 cm (8'2" x 6'6"). Nain rugs are almost always built on an ivory or cream ground; this one is set instead on a deep, near-black field, a genuine departure for the design.
What you see
The first impression is that black ground, densely worked over with cream floral vinework that spreads across it like fine embroidery. At the centre sits a large ivory medallion, drawn in the same florals, and against the dark field its outline reads with unusual clarity. Camel and tan scrollwork threads through the black between the vines, with small dots of red and dusty rose caught among the leaves. A wide ivory border frames the field, filled with small floral cartouches and rosettes, and closed in by narrow guard stripes that echo the field's dark tone.
How it was made
Nain rugs are graded by their "La" count, a measure of knots per span of warp: the lower the number, the finer the weave. This piece carries between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre, a density that takes many months of steady, close work to complete. The pile is wool throughout, but the fine drawing in the scrollwork and medallion is picked out in silk, a fibre that spins far thinner than wool and lets the weaver carry a sharper line. That pairing of solid wool ground and hair-fine silk highlight is what gives the black field its quiet sheen and keeps the cream vinework so precisely drawn.
At home
At just under two and a half by two metres, this rug suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room, somewhere its full pattern can be taken in at once. The black field holds its own against dark wood or leather furniture, while the ivory medallion and border lift a room with pale floors or walls. Underfoot the wool pile is dense and firm, ten millimetres deep, made for daily use rather than for standing in a corner. As daylight crosses it through the day, the silk highlights catch in turn, and the cream scrollwork seems to move against the black.
