About This Nain
Where it comes from
This is a Nain, from the small weaving town of that name in central Iran, 351 x 250 cm (11'6" x 8'2"). Nain, also written Na'in, built its reputation on fine wool touched with silk and worked in pale ivory and blue, a combination collectors still look for first. This piece keeps the fineness and the silk but turns the palette on its head: the ground here is a deep wine red, and the ivory is kept for the medallion, the spandrels and the border.
What you see
The first impression is of that ivory star medallion glowing against the red. It sits at the centre of a field packed edge to edge with floral scrollwork, so dense that the red barely shows through, yet the drawing stays clean rather than crowded. The medallion's scalloped outline is picked up again in matching cream spandrels at the four corners, giving the whole composition a firm architectural symmetry. Around it runs a wide ivory border, filled with small floral palmettes on scrolling vines and held in place by a pair of thin guard stripes, lighter than the field and clearly separate from it.
How it was made
That crispness is a matter of technique as much as design. The pile is wool lifted with silk, and silk spins far thinner than wool, so where it is used the knot can be tighter and the outline sharper. At a density of 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, achieving that fineness across an area this size on a cotton warp meant many months at the loom, all to keep the scrollwork legible even where it fills every inch of the ground. The pile is kept low, at 12 mm, so the surface stays smooth and the drawing reads clearly rather than sinking into depth.
At home
At this size the rug is built for a dining table or a generous seating group in a living room, and the red will hold its own against dark wood or dark upholstery rather than being overpowered by it. Underfoot it is dense, firm and even, a surface made for daily use rather than a room kept for best. As daylight moves across it through the day, the ivory medallion is what keeps catching the eye, floating clear of the red long after the rest of the pattern has settled into the background.
