About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, the city weave of central Iran, made in the workshop tradition from a drawn cartoon rather than from memory. Nain is best known for pairing fine wool with silk highlights, usually against an ivory ground — here the field is set instead in a deep midnight blue, and the drawing runs edge to edge with no medallion to gather it. The piece measures 304 x 200 cm (10'0" x 6'7").

What you see

The first impression is of a dense cream vine pattern standing clear against that dark ground. It is a Mahi lattice, the classic Herati structure of serrated, fish-like leaves and small rosettes, repeated evenly across the whole field with nothing at the centre to break it. Dusty light blue tendrils thread between the cream vines, and small rust-brown and dark navy touches sit inside the palmettes. A wide cream border of the same floral vine work frames the field, set off by narrow blue guard stripes, and reads as roughly a fifth of the rug's width.

How it was made

A Nain is graded by La, and a finer number means a tighter knot; this one is a 9La, knotted at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre in wool with silk on a cotton warp. Silk spins thinner than wool, so it can be knotted more precisely, which is what lets a pattern this fine hold its shape over such a large, unbroken field — with no medallion to anchor the eye, the whole surface has to stay disciplined, and it does. The pile is clipped to 8 mm and finished smooth, giving the lattice a crisp, even edge rather than a soft one.

At home

At 304 x 200 cm this is a dining room or living room rug, sized for a table or a seating group rather than a corner. The midnight blue holds its own against dark wood or dark upholstery, while the cream lattice keeps the room from feeling closed in, even where daylight is limited. Underfoot it is firm and smooth rather than deep, dense enough for a room that gets daily use. Move around it and the silk catches the light differently from each angle, so the same lattice seems to shift its sheen through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 304 × 200 cm (6.08 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 6.08 m² that is roughly 2.7 to 3.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
