About This Nain

Where it comes from

A Nain rug from central Iran, 193 x 130 cm (6'4" x 4'3"), from a city known above all for restraint: silk laid into fine wool, patterns drawn to the last petal, and a palette that almost always settles on ivory and blue. This piece keeps the drawing but changes the ground. A deep wine-red field, unusual for the type, carries the design instead, and the effect is a Nain that reads as elegant rather than loud.

What you see

The colour meets you first, a bold red that would dominate on its own, held in check by a large ivory medallion at the centre. Its outer edge is finely scalloped rather than a plain oval, so it sits on the red like lace rather than a shape stamped onto the field. Pale blue petals radiate out from it, echoed in the floral vine scrollwork that fills the red ground and in the cream spandrels at the corners. A wide cream border, close to a fifth of the rug's width, carries the same blue floral scrolling, framed by thin guard stripes, and it is this repetition of ivory and blue against red, rather than any one motif, that keeps the whole composition calm.

How it was made

That precision comes from the loom as much as the design. The rug is hand-knotted in wool with silk brought in for the highlights, silk spinning far thinner than wool and so allowing a tighter, crisper line wherever it is used — you can see it in the slight sheen that sits only in the blue motifs, nowhere else on the field. Knotted at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, with a 10 mm pile, the drawing holds its edges even in the finest scrollwork, which is what makes a scalloped medallion this delicate possible at all.

At home

At this size the rug suits a bedroom floor, a study, or a smaller seating corner rather than a full dining table, and the red will hold its own against dark wood furniture while lifting a paler floor considerably. Underfoot it is dense and fine rather than deep, firm enough for daily use without losing definition in the pattern. As light moves across it through the day, the blue motifs catch and let go of their sheen in turn, so the medallion never looks quite the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 193 × 130 cm (2.51 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 2.51 m² that is roughly 1.1 to 1.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
