About This Nain
Where it comes from
Nain is one of the young towns in the great Persian weaving tradition, and one of the most exacting: a city workshop, working from a drawn plan, where wool is lifted with fine silk to a level of finish few other rugs of this scale attempt. This piece measures 300 x 197 cm (9'10" x 6'5"), and what marks it out even within that tradition is what it does not have — no central medallion, only pattern, edge to edge.
What you see
The field is a deep ivory, covered from corner to corner in a fine, dense lattice of floral vine-work in the classic Mahi manner, small palmette medallions scattered evenly across it rather than gathered into one commanding centre. Soft slate blue and dusty rose carry the vine, with touches of muted olive-brown and dark navy tracing the outlines. The border stays close in tone to the field, narrow bands of ivory and pale blue-grey with small rosettes, so the rug closes at its edge rather than being framed by it. The overall effect is less a statement than a surface — even, calm, and remarkably consistent from one corner to the next.
How it was made
That evenness is the product of the knotting itself. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, this is fine work by any standard, and it is silk rather than wool that makes the finest outlines possible, since a strand of silk can be spun thinner than wool and so holds a sharper line at the same scale. On a cotton warp, with a wool pile lifted by silk highlights and clipped to 12 millimetres, that density is what lets the small repeating palmettes stay crisp without a medallion to anchor the eye — the pattern carries itself, motif by motif, across the whole field.
At home
A rug this size, without a medallion pulling the eye to its centre, sits particularly well under a dining table or across a seating group in a living room, where it is seen whole rather than from one end. The ivory ground lifts a room with limited daylight, and the blue and rose stay quiet enough not to compete with darker furniture around it. Underfoot it is dense and firm, the wool base built to take daily use even with silk running through it, and in the evening the silk catches the light along the vine-work, a faint shift of tone that moves gently as you cross the room.
