About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain from central Iran, 300 x 248 cm (9'10" x 8'2"). Nain is young by Persian standards, yet within a few generations it built a name on one kind of luxury: fine wool lifted with silk highlights, drawn to a workshop cartoon rather than knotted from memory, and graded by La number for the fineness of its knot. This piece wears that reputation in an unusually soft register — ivory and powder blue, rather than the bolder cream-and-navy the design more often shows.
What you see
The field reads as a single soft ivory surface, so evenly toned that the pattern seems to sit inside the wool rather than on it. There is no medallion. Instead a dense, all-over Mahi lattice runs edge to edge, curling vines in camel and tan carrying small rosettes and serrated leaves in blue-grey and dusty pink, with a few notes of dark navy set deep in the scrollwork. A wide, multi-band border repeats the same small florals in matching cream tones, close enough in value to the field to frame the design without breaking its calm.
How it was made
The softness is a matter of dyeing, but the precision behind it is a matter of knot. This Nain is hand-knotted in wool touched with silk on a cotton warp, at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre. Silk spins far finer than wool, so wherever it was worked in, a leaf or rosette can be outlined with a sharpness plain wool cannot hold — which is what keeps a pattern this dense from ever looking heavy. The pile is clipped to just 12 millimetres, low enough to leave the drawing crisp. At this density, a rug this size took the better part of a year at the loom.
At home
A piece this size sits naturally in a dining room, under a table and chairs, or anchoring a living room seating group where the whole field can be seen at once. Against a pale floor the ivory ground keeps the room light; against darker furniture it comes forward gently, warmed by the camel and dusty pink rather than announcing itself in red or navy. Underfoot it is dense, firm and even, made to be walked on rather than kept for best. Let the afternoon light cross it, and the silk lifts the surface just enough to notice.
