About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, also written Na'in, a city-workshop rug from the town of the same name in central Iran, measuring 296 x 248 cm (9'9" x 8'2"). Nain rose quickly to the top of Persian rug making, prized for wool pile lifted with fine silk and for a palette that almost always settles into ivory and blue. Fineness is graded there by a "La" number, the lower the number the finer the knot.

What you see

The field is a soft ivory, kept unusually clear for a pattern known for filling every inch. Across it lies a large star medallion, its edge cut into many fine points rather than a plain oval, drawn in pale steel blue-grey. Around it, floral scrollwork spreads into the corners, touched with soft camel and small notes of navy and rust. A wide border of floral cartouches and rosettes, in matching cream and blue-grey, runs the full perimeter, held by several slim guard stripes.

How it was made

The rug is hand-knotted, on a cotton warp, in wool lifted with silk, at a density of between 441,000 and 500,000 knots per square metre. Silk spins far thinner than wool, so wherever it runs through the pile the weaver can turn a tighter, smaller knot, and it is this that lets the medallion's many points stay sharp rather than soften into a curve. At only 12 mm the pile stays low enough to hold that precision underfoot, the whole piece the work of months at the loom rather than weeks.

At home

A rug of this size suits a living or dining room, sitting comfortably under a sofa group or a table without crowding either. The ivory ground lifts a pale floor and holds its own against darker furniture, the blue-grey and camel keeping the room calm rather than cold. Underfoot the pile is fine and dense, made to be walked on rather than kept for best, and as light moves across the room the silk in the scrollwork catches and glows.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 296 × 248 cm (7.34 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 7.34 m² that is roughly 3.2 to 3.7 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
