About This Nain

Where it comes from

This is a Nain, a city-workshop rug from the town of that name in central Iran — also written Na'in — measuring 344 x 248 cm (11'3" x 8'2"). Nain is known for pairing fine wool with silk highlights, worked to a drawn plan, in a palette usually built around ivory and blue. Here that scheme is turned around: the ground itself is a deep night-blue, almost black.

What you see

The first impression is of that dark field, glowing rather than heavy, lit by an ivory medallion at its centre. The medallion is a many-pointed star rather than a plain oval, its edge crisp against the soft curl of scrollwork around it. Cream tendrils, dusty rose and tan-brown blossoms spread outward across the navy field. A wide ivory border of rosettes and scrolling vines, edged by thin blue-grey guard stripes, closes the design and returns the eye to the medallion's pale tones.

How it was made

A rug of this quality is knotted from a fixed cartoon, which is why the medallion's points and the border's rosettes repeat so exactly. The pile is wool lifted with silk; silk spins far finer than wool, letting the knotter turn the star-point's corners cleanly instead of rounding them off. At 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, on a cotton warp, that precision took months at the loom — a density that holds this much drawing in a pile only 10 mm deep.

At home

This size suits a living or dining room, under a dining table or a sofa group, close enough to take in the whole medallion. The navy field holds its own against dark furniture and warms a pale floor, while the ivory medallion carries the light. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, made for daily use rather than for careful steps. Through the day the silk highlights shift from a quiet gleam to a brighter one.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 344 × 248 cm (8.53 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 8.53 m² that is roughly 3.8 to 4.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
