About This Nain

Where it comes from

A Nain, from the city workshop tradition of central Iran, 183 x 117 cm (6'0" x 3'10"). Nain has built its reputation on fine wool grounds lifted with silk, drawn in a cool ivory-and-blue palette that is instantly recognisable across the trade. This piece takes that same drawing and reverses the usual balance: rather than ivory carrying the field, the field itself is a deep, saturated red, with the ivory reserved for the medallion and border.

What you see

The first impression is of that red ground, dense with scrolling floral vine, and against it a large ivory medallion rises, star-shaped, with pendants reaching toward the ends of the field. Blue scrollwork, in two close tones of steel and slate, is drawn through the medallion with sharp, even lines, outlined in navy, and small flowers in burgundy and brown sit among the vines like punctuation. The wide ivory border answers the medallion directly, carrying the same dense blue floral meander, and is held in check by several slender guard stripes before the field returns.

How it was made

The precision visible in that scrollwork comes from the materials and the density of the knotting. The pile is wool with silk worked through it, set on a cotton warp and knotted by hand at somewhere between 321,000 and 380,000 knots per square metre. Silk takes a finer twist than wool, so wherever it appears the line can be drawn tighter and the edge sharper, which is why the blue scrolls hold their shape at a scale that wool alone would soften. At 8 millimetres the pile is kept low enough to let all of that detail read clearly, with a light sheen across the silk that shifts as you move past it.

At home

At this size the rug suits a bedroom or a quiet landing rather than a large gathering room, laid beside a bed or under a chair where it will be seen close up. The red holds its depth against dark wood furniture and warms a pale floor considerably, while the ivory medallion keeps the whole composition from feeling heavy. Underfoot it is dense and firm, entirely fit for daily use, and in changing light the silk highlights catch and let go, so the scrollwork never looks quite the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 183 × 117 cm (2.14 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 2.14 m² that is roughly 690,000 to 810,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
