About This Nain
Where it comes from
A Nain, from the city workshops of central Iran, 260 x 203 cm (8'6" x 6'8"). Nain rugs are prized above nearly every other Persian type for their fineness, their silk highlights set into a wool pile, and their ivory-and-blue palette, graded by "La" number according to how tightly they are knotted. Most are built around a central medallion. This one is not.
What you see
The field is a deep navy, close to black, and it is covered edge to edge with ivory floral scrollwork, so that from across a room the effect is one of light drawn on dark rather than a picture set inside a border. There is no medallion to anchor the eye. Instead palmettes and serrated leaves scroll continuously across the whole field, touched here and there with pale blue-grey and a soft dusty rose, and the pattern simply continues to the edge, where a wide ivory border of small floral rosettes and a thin diamond guard stripe closes it off.
How it was made
This is hand-knotted work, a cotton warp carrying a wool pile lifted by silk highlights, and the density runs to 441,000-500,000 knots per square metre, work measured in months rather than weeks. Silk takes a finer twist than wool, which is what lets the workshop draw leaves and rosettes this small and still keep their outlines crisp rather than blurred. That precision matters more here than on a medallion rug, because there is no single focal point to carry the design; every part of the field has to hold its own drawing to the same standard, repeated without a break across the whole surface.
At home
A rug of this size sits well under a dining table or in front of a sofa group, and because the pattern has no centre, furniture can stand anywhere on it without cutting a medallion in half. Against pale floors the navy field holds its ground; against dark wood or dark upholstery it recedes into something quieter, letting the ivory vine do the work. The pile is fine and short, smooth underfoot, with the faint sheen of silk catching differently as you cross the room. It is a rug that keeps giving something to look at wherever you stand on it, and that, more than any single motif, is what stays with you.
